Why You Shouldn’t Use Docker Anymore

Welcome back! As most of you know, Docker is a very popular tool that many engineers use, it allows you to containerize your software for ease of deployment, but they made a massive change recently. Essentially, Docker will now require a paid subscription if you are a large business, if you’re a single person using Docker than nothing changes, yet.

The way the new pricing structure works is they have separate tiers for users, a personal user is still free ($0), a pro user is $5 a month, a team (which Docker states as 5 people or more) is $7 a month per user, and a business account (which Docker states is 50 or more people) are $21 a month per user. Now, existing customers will have until January 31, 2022 to choose a subscription for their application, which could cause some companies who didn’t initially account for this random cost. Now, Docker states that about half of their customers will fall under the free tier, but this still could cause issues for existing companies.

Here’s the thing, what stops Docker from charging the other half of their clients (non-pro users) in the future, couldn’t they just randomly bring in a new subscription model for everyone? It may seem crazy, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Ultimately, it may make sense to move away from Docker, maybe switching over to Kubernetes:
What do you think? Am I just looking into this too much? Or do you think theres some merit here? I would love to hear your thoughts about this!
