Stop Using Docker

Welcome back! Docker is a very popular tool that allows us to containerize our software, however, the last year or so has been a quite controversial time for Docker. In my opinion, this kind of started with Docker beginning to charge for certain features, but it looks like there are a few more issues at hand as well. A few days ago, a user posted the following article:

Within the article, the user states that Docker is deleting open source organizations, they go on to state that Docker sent out an email urging organizations to upgrade to the paid team plan, if they don’t, their account, including all of their images, could be deleted!

Interestingly enough, Docker has actually apologized for this situation, they stated that they “did a terrible job announcing the end of Docker free teams”:

Within their article, they stated that they apologized for how they communicated this change, they have now communicated that they won’t be deleting any open source projects unless the user decides to delete them:

This is great news, and it makes me super happy that users of software are getting their opinions heard, however, something doesn’t sit right with me. Personally, it feels like Docker is apologizing because they got caught, not because they felt like that did something wrong, I’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on this, but I think we should consider looking at other alternatives besides Docker nowadays.

Do you agree or disagree with me? I would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Thanks So Much!
